The Effect of Pulmonary Resection of the Clmpliance of Human Respiratory System

Abstract
Compliance of respiratory system was measured in 19 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis before and at 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months after pulmonary resections.
Passive pressure exerted by the respiratory apparatus, such as the lungs, the thoracic cage including the diaphragm and total respiratory system, was first determined under various lung volumes and then the corresponding compliance values were computed at the lung volumes from the level of ERV to 750 and 1250ml. The measurement of the lung pressure was made by means of the intraesophageal ballon method and the thoracic cage pressure was calculated by substracting the lung pressure from the total respiratory pressure.
Results are follows:
1. The mean value of compliance of the respiratory system in the pre-operative patients showed significant decrease as compared with that of normal Koreans.
2. Two and four weeks after various types of lung resection, compliance values were significantly diminished as compared with the pre-operative values.
3. Three months after surgery the values of compliance returned close to the pre-opetative values, and showed no essential decrease due to surgery.
4. Correlation between the decrease of compliance values and the number of segments revoved and decrease of vital capacity does aot seem to be apparent in this study.
